It’s been a privilege to partner with the team at Sunbridge Road Mission Church this year.  The small team are reaching out to second language speakers in Bradford with free English classes. Many of their students come from Iran, Brazil and the Sudan.

The Bradford church team started with the Christian TEFL 70-hour teaching ESOL courses in late 2019. CT Director of Studies William Bradridge had the pleasure of meeting them in Bradford. He helped them to get started on their courses with face-to-face training and joined them in worship.

After successfully launching in-class lessons in early 2020, the pandemic soon forced them into a choice. Either they would have to teach on Zoom or cease teaching altogether. While adapting to new technology is not easy, the team remain committed to this local outreach and they have continued both with free Zoom English classes and more teacher training from Christian TEFL.

Some of the team have recently engaged on CT’s new Zoom-based, live Spotlight courses and moving forward with further CT training options and resources. There is a real need for English to communicate and a waiting list for the ESOL classes locally.

About training with Christian TEFL

When asked about the impact of the training, Sunbridge ESOL Co-ordinator Judith Dyson said:

“What made it possible was the training and support we received from Christian TEFL.

It really motivated and envisioned me to see how God can use teaching English to share His love and concern for all people. The Spotlight sessions have given me confidence to use Zoom to teach online. The resources produced for online lessons have been really useful.

The Christian TEFL 70-hour course and the Spotlight zoom sessions, together with the support and motivation received from tutors, enabled someone like me, with little teaching experience and not a huge amount of confidence, to begin teaching a group of beginners and to really enjoy it.”

It is really encouraging to see the Bradford team’s dedication! We look forward to seeing how God will be working both in and through them on ESOL outreach journey.
